Project overview
Inspired by EQD Black Ash, an extremely hard-to-find limited edition fuzz/overdrive with cues from the classic 3-knob Tone Bender formula. Make your tone erupt with an explosive yet precise treble response, a powerful and articulate midrange, and a magmatic subterranean bass extension.
Introduction
Ash Device gives you the chance to build one of the scarcest pedals out there, with a board able to capture many of the best qualities of a Tone Bender. There are only 1500 units of Black Ash pedals worldwide, with prices that can go from $180 up to $600, and now you can build your own.
Let’s see some of the features that make this pedal so special and appreciated by pedal lovers: The unique Top control adjusts key frequencies between 2kHz and 10kHz to select how “forward” the guitar sits in a full-band mix and helps to pair this dynamic fuzz Ash Device with different pickup types.
With Top at low settings, the signal takes an organic quality, with a soft, pleasantly subdued upper harmonic presence. And at high settings, it offers a more robust response, with a sharp attack that makes humbuckers chime and makes single coils glisten. The Gain control has plenty of output gain that surpasses unity. The Fuzz knob adjusts the amount of gain cooled-off amp-like breakup to erupting burning fuzz tones.

Great pedal. I swapped the 2N3904 for some MP38A germanium transistors and it mellowed it out a little (less fuzz and less aggressive). The 2N3904s also sounded great. Easy build for a nice device.
